Scouting is for everyone, and so is ScoutHitch. Leaders, parents, and volunteers use it on phones at campouts, with screen readers, with a keyboard only, with large text, and in bright sunlight. We design and test for all of them.
Our standard
In short: We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA everywhere in the app.
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. Accessibility checks run automatically on every change, and new features aren't finished until they work with a keyboard and a screen reader.
What's built in
- Every feature works with a keyboard alone. A “Skip to main content” link appears first on every page.
- Clear, visible focus outlines show where you are.
- Screen-reader labels on every control, real headings and landmarks, and announcements when things change.
- Light and dark themes with text contrast that meets or exceeds WCAG AA.
- Pages reflow on small screens and when zoomed to 400%, without sideways scrolling.
- Status is never shown by color alone — it always has a word or an icon too.
- Touch targets are large enough for gloved or shaky hands.
- Animations stop automatically if your device asks for reduced motion.
Display preferences
In short: Adjust text size, contrast, motion, link underlines, and text spacing — no account needed.
Use the Display preferences on this page (also on your Account page) to make text larger, increase contrast, reduce motion, always underline links, or add extra space between letters, words, and lines for easier reading. Your choices are saved in your browser on this device.
Known limitations
- Badge artwork is decorative; the award name and status are always provided as text alongside it.
- Photos and videos are shared by unit members. Captions double as the text alternative for each photo, and we prompt for them, but they're optional; photos without one are described by their date. Videos don't have closed captions yet.
- Requirement text is a short tracking label, not the full official requirement. Ask your unit for the full text in an accessible format if you need it.
